In order to generate additional income in addition to the laborious business of saltpeter extraction, Johann Georg Gabler began to boil clarified butter. At the beginning of the 19th century it was delivered on ships and horse-drawn vehicles to Alsace, across Lake Constance and to distant Saint Petersburg. The customers paid with bills of exchange.
