As early as 1984, the retail chain E.Leclerc anticipated the development of payment by bank card . It wanted to control the rise of this means of payment in its points of sale so as to reduce costs for the end user.
By taking a majority stake of 66% in a bank operating at the local level, the E.Leclerc brand gave birth, on January 8, 1991, to Banque Edel SNC.
